Posted: 10 Oct 2006 04:13 PM CDT

Hello bay area geeks!

Geek comedy night is back, this time in two great locations. It's the only comedy show where we get five of the bay area's most hilarious, most geekiest (yes we actually said most geekiest) comedians to share their insights on the major geek issues affecting their lives. If you love technology, attending renaissance faires or arguing about which superhero kicks the most ass, this is the show for you. If you see gaming as a lifestyle choice or spend most of your time working in a cube, this is definitely the show for you. Finally, if you know the correct answer to the question 'who shot first' is ALWAYS Han, then you absolutely cannot miss this show!

This month our headliner is Tom Smith, and you can get in for half price if you wear a halloween costume!

Here's the details on our shows:

Geek Comedy in Sunnyvale: 10/11
I am new to Tribe, so I thought that I would introduce myself. My name is Heather and I am quite the computer nerd. I am into HTML, CSS, PHP, Illustrator, etc. I thought that this would be a cool tribe to join because, perhaps, I would be able to actually find people to talk to whose eyes don't glaze over when I talk about assigning values to variables and setting file permissions to 755. Anyway, glad to be a part of the group.
so I'm thinking it's time to buy some kind of laptop/notebook.

I am not so informed on this and if people have opinions to share that would be great. This seems like a good tribe to post this in :)

Basically, I want something that is:

(1) portable
mostly around the house, but occasionally on trips.
(2) internet - we have a wireless box thingy in the house
(3) burns CDs.
CDs that I have already bought and thus if I burn them for my own personal use I will not be infringing any copyright. Obviously.
(4) DVD player
(5) like the budgie - cheap! and I mean a good price all in, including extended warranties etc., say under $1300-$1400. no hidden costs :)

All/any thoughts appreciated

Are refurbished comps any good?
Are dell really that bad?
Things like defaulting the built in firewall to be on, just concern me. Maybe I'm just a bit paranoid. *lol* I just got done reinstalling XP at home, and going thru to make sure only the needed services were actually running. (Not to mention changing 90% of the default locations for things from my C: drive.) Now it wants to automagickally start MORE services?! I don't remember what else I've read that's made me a bit hesitant about it.

I remember going to my Kindergarten evaluation that would decide if I was ready for Kindergarten or not--at 4 and a half years, 5 years old, I remember worrying if I'd be able to do it, or if I was somehow sub-normal. Then in first grade I had the same fears of my initial reading evaluation, even though I had been learning to read at home with my mum already, and knew quite a bit.

When I've talked to "normal" friends, I usually get told that this didn't kick in until much later, say 3rd or 4th grade, which leaves me wondering.. Is this a geeky trait, or was I just a paranoid nervous kid?

Weapons of Math Instruction

At New York's Kennedy Airport today, an individual, later discovered to be a public school teacher, was arrested trying to board a flight while in possession of a ruler, a protractor, a setsquare, a slide rule, and a calculator. At a morning press conference, Attorney General John Ashcroft said he believes the man to be a member of the notorious Al-gebra movement. He is being charged by the FBI with carrying weapons of math instruction.

"Al-gebra is a fearsome cult," Ashcroft said. "They desire average solutions by means and extremes, and sometimes go off on tangents in a search of absolute values. They use secret code names like 'x' and 'y' and refer to themselves as 'unknowns', but we have determined they belong to a common denominator of the Axis of Medieval with coordinates in every country. As the Greek philanderer Isosceles used to say, 'There are 3 sides to every triangle.'"

When asked to comment on the arrest, President Bush said, "If God had wanted us to have better weapons of math instruction, He would have given us more fingers and toes."

You have the torture scene in the “Empath”, Orion Slave Girls all over the place and I’m not kidding you here In the Episode “Elann of Troyius” the female of the week says “Tell me of this ancient earth custom called spanking” WHAT a give away.
